First Week

Our first week in Edinburgh has whirled past, during which we have (in no particular order of occurrence or importance):

  • unpacked as much as we can find room for (which is not everything we brought, boxes of which are tucked away in the wardrobes, under the bed and concealed under fleece throws)
  • tried out the local chippy (generous portions!)
  • learned to use less soap and washing up liquid (Edinburgh's water being a lot softer than Bristol's)
  • registered to vote in Edinburgh in the Euros
  • struggled to judge the temperature control on our electric hob (still preferring gas even though I know I shouldn't on environmental grounds)
  • worked our way though the letting agent's 76 page inventory
  • attended Central Edinburgh Quaker Meeting (where we received a warm welcome and enjoyed a shared lunch)
  • enjoyed wandering in and around the High Street on Edinburgh's first Open Streets day (bringing back fond memories of Bristol's Make Sundays Special)
  • joined the library and borrowed The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
  • spent a very pleasant evening singing with the Quaker singing group (songs interspersed with useful conversations about Quaker life and activities in Edinburgh)
  • strolled around the Botanic Gardens (stopping for tea and biscuits on a bench overlooking the Edinburgh skyline - photo above)
  • followed the Water of Leith Walkway to Stockbridge
  • took part in an Open Book reading group in the Botanic House
  • checked out two firms of solicitors
  • viewed two flats
It's slowly beginning to sink in that we're here for good, and not just for an extended visit.  It (thankfully!) still feels right, but that's not to say that there aren't times when I worry about how it will all work out, because I do.  I miss bumping in to people I know as I go about my daily business, and have to accept that it will be a long time before I build up a similar circle of friends to the one I had in Bristol.  However I've made a start and am resolved to continue.  I'm finding Edinburgh folk very kind and friendly, which bodes well.

Roll on Week 2!
